This program has a proven history of successfully reducing violent crimes and homicides.
In 2024, Charlotte faced a troubling rise in violent crimes, with reported incidents increasing to 5,662 by the third quarter, compared to 5,342 in 2023. Homicides also rose from 65 in 2023 to 83 in 2024. These figures highlight the urgent need for proactive, community-based initiatives to enhance public safety. This program is specifically designed to partner with the community, law enforcement, nonprofits and other other organizations to address crime, drugs, and violence while fostering sustainable solutions that uplift residents and promote long-term community success.
Based on the One Baltimore Model, a successful initiative in Baltimore, MD, which achieved significant reductions in violent crimes and murders—particularly among youth—over a five-year period. Adapted to meet Charlotte's unique needs, the We Are One Charlotte Program focuses on neighborhoods with high rates of criminal activity wherein dedicated teams collaborate with community leaders, clergy, law enforcement, educators, and other stakeholders to deliver impactful training and education programs, and a set of holistic services that reduce crime and promote sustainability.
A cornerstone of the program is Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), a therapeutic intervention designed to help individuals process the emotional impact of traumatic events. Conducted in small group settings shortly after crises—such as violent acts or shootings—CISD provides structured support that fosters recovery, resilience, and overall community well-being.
The program's success is driven by a strong network of licensed counselors and partners who deliver a comprehensive range of integrated services.
